Dec. 14th, 2009 07:00 pm Hanukah - Day 4 - Original Fiction (Lonely Doesn't Always Mean Alone)

For the fourth day, one of my original short stories.

This was my first published short story. It's in Hot & Bothered 2, edited by Karen X Tulchinsky, which is an anthology of lesbian erotica short-shorts (limit of 1,000 words). Somewhere in a box is a tape of me at the book launch in Vancouver, reading to an audience for the very first time. I was absolutely terrified.

The rights to the story reverted to me along time ago, and I don't have any intention of trying to submit it anywhere else. So, here's a little shot of lesbian erotica to cheer up your Monday.

Dec. 13th, 2009 05:45 pm Hanukah - Day 3 - For Your Sweet Tooth

For the third day, some of my favourite dessert recipes. I don't bake very much these days (or at all), but these are recipes that I've made many times over the years.

All but one of these recipes came from family and friends and are handwritten on yellowed, stained, and bent recipe cards that I've owned for a long time.

Dec. 13th, 2009 10:12 am Things I've read and enjoyed lately

Before I dive into the recs, two small fests have started posting on livejournal:

  • [livejournal.com profile] 3fan_holidays, which includes drabbles and short pieces (no more than 2k) in Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and/or Pirates of the Caribbean. It just started posting today.

  • [livejournal.com profile] severus_lucius, which is hosting the Severus/Lucius Romance Fest and is posting one story twice a week. Two have posted so far.

As always, pay attention to the warnings on the stories, if such things matter to you. And consider looking at other entries in the fests and leaving comments if you enjoyed these.

Dec. 12th, 2009 06:31 pm Hanukah - Day 2 - A Bit of Myself

For this second day, I'm posting an article I wrote several years ago (shortly after I met [personal profile] batdina) that was published in Bad Subjects in an issue called Alien Languages.

It's called Learning Myself, and there's a lot about myself in it. In some ways, this is an appropriate gift because I talk so little about myself these days. I seem to have lost the talent for it at some point, perhaps because I couldn't talk about myself for so long during the whole visa/green card process.

I live with [personal profile] batdina now and a lot has changed in my life, but those are merely details.

This article was originally published under the name 'Sarah bat Avraham' here: http://bad.eserver.org/issues/1997/31/avraham.html

Dec. 11th, 2009 03:09 pm Hanukah - Day 1 - Food for the Soul

Some Hanukah recipes, courtesy of a little booklet of recipe cards filled with old home recipes that I inherited from my mother-in-law. The booklet was created to raise money for the building fund of the Jewish fellowship in the town where they lived. All of the recipes are family favourites from those who contributed; some of them have been cooked by family members for generations.

None of these recipes are healthy, but they're all traditional Hanukah recipes.

Potato Latkes (apple sauce and sour cream not included) )

Dec. 11th, 2009 11:17 am Hanukah - lights and friends

For those of you who don't know, Hanukah starts tonight. For the eight days of the festival, I plan to post small things - virtual gifts - that you are free to take for yourselves and use as you wish.

Each night for the eight days, I'll be posting some recipes, possibly some icons, and at least one fanfic story (HP gen) on the theme of Hanukah.

Happy Hanukah. And for those of you who light candles, enjoy the flames and the warmth of friends, family, and the possibility of miracles.

Dec. 11th, 2009 11:50 am song lyric meme, new router, and thanks

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my gem225.

Which song was this lyric from?

That result makes me smile. :-)

Greg put in a new router Monday (so December 7), and we bought the two-year extended warranty from Micro Center, so we're covered for three whole years. Wow. We'll see how long it lasts. The last one made it over two years (installed end of May 2007, went December 6, 2009).

Thanks to [info]agentxpdble, [info]mareen, and [info]xkatjafx for the snowflake cookies and to [info]tinnean for the fancy hot chocolate. :-)

ETA: Oh! Happy anniversary to me and Greg! Fifteen years married - go us!

Dec. 10th, 2009 07:46 am One of those pictures that strikes a chord

I was looking through the photographs on my computer and found this one. I was sitting on a bench on the Canadian side of the US/Canada border with my grandmother when it was taken.

Separation and connections of this kind, created by others, have impacted so much of my life that it seemed like a thing to share this morning.

For no particular reason, except that I wanted to share something.

Dec. 9th, 2009 08:17 am For me! Recs!

Two gifts have posted for me in the past week, and I've been horribly remiss in remembering to crow about them.

My [info]snarry_holidays gift!fic is Of Hope Restored. It's a story that goes AU after OotP and gives us just over 20,000 words of forced bonding and de-aged Snape. And it's one of those stories that I will be rereading come January.

And [livejournal.com profile] iulia_linnea wrote me a sweet and lovely gen ficlet titled Seeing Fairies. Aunt Luna gives Lily Luna a new perspective after big brother James teases her into tears.

Go read them both and leave comments for the authors, they totally deserve them.

Dec. 8th, 2009 07:30 am Brrr....

The cars outside are iced over, and I'm feeling the distinct lack of an ice scraper this morning.

On very very rare occasions, I've needed one before. Not needing one is one of the distinct pleasures of living here, after all.

Damn. It's going to be a 'warm up the car before driving to work' morning. And I really really haven't missed those in the years since I moved here from places north.

Oh, and can someone tell my giggling, laughing, finger-pointing inner Canadian to STFU.
